VisionSt. Mary's Visitation Parish School endeavors to provide an atmosphere of high expectations that challenge the individual and promote lifelong learning so each student can reach the fullness of his or her individual potential. We provide opportunities for the development of each student's physical and creative abilities in a Catholic climate where we promote social responsibility and an attitude of acceptance toward all. Strong History. Bright Future. St. Mary's Visitation School, located in the heart of Elm Grove, was founded in 1859 by the School Sisters of Notre Dame and has been educating generations of students in academics and Catholic formation for more than 150 years.
Challenging and Supportive. Academically, SMV offers a challenging curriculum designed to prepare students to succeed in top-ranked high schools. Core academic courses in reading, language arts, science, math, social studies and religion are enhanced by "special" courses in the areas of Spanish, music, art, technology, physical education and media resources.
Rooted in our faith. Religious education at SMV encompasses not only formal religion classes, but also an education in Catholic beliefs and values that is integrated in every aspect of the academic curriculum. Students attend all-school Mass twice a week and have daily school-wide prayer and a rich sacramental experience. In keeping with our school mission to live our faith, SMV emphasizes service to each other, parish, community and surrounding groups and individuals in need.
Small class sizes. Class size policy states maximum class size for grades 1-8 is 27; maximum K5 class size is 25; maximum K4 class size is 20; maximum K3 class size is 14. Our school currently offers a teacher-student ratio of 1:14. This is unique among area schools and allows our students an enriched and specialized learning environment. With smaller class sizes, the opportunities for guidance and enrichment are multiplied. These are guidelines only and will be reviewed annually. As always, final decisions are made by the pastor and the principal.
Our doors are open. School Hours for K4-grade 8: 7:45 a.m. - 2:45 p.m. Students may enter the building at 7:35 a.m. School hours for K3 are 7:45 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. or 11:30 a.m. on either Tuesday/Thursday or Monday/Wednesday/Friday or Monday through Friday. Our After School Care Program is available from 2:45-6:00 p.m. for students in K4-5th grade.
Home is where the heart is. SMV families live primarily in Elm Grove, Brookfield, Wauwatosa, New Berlin and the surrounding areas, including Waukesha, Greenfield, Milwaukee, Menomonee Falls, West Allis and Franklin. Busing is provided through Elmbrook School District in most cases. A small number of families living outside the boundaries pay for busing. Oh the places they will go. SMV graduates have attended the following high schools: Marquette University High School, Divine Savior Holy Angels, Waukesha Catholic Memorial, Pius XI, Brookfield East, Brookfield Central, Brookfield Academy, Wauwatosa East, Wauwatosa West, University School.
How we measure up. Standardized tests are intended to help schools identify strengths and weaknesses. SMV administers the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, a measure of achievement, and COGat, a measure of ability. Both assessments are given yearly to students in grades 3-8. These test results are used to chart student progress and a course for improvement. Overall, our composite scores are in the 94th-99th percentile. The grade equivalency is 2-5 years above grade level.
Invested wisely. Tuition and financial assistance is determined annually. Learn more about tuition for this year. A family discount plan is in effect. Parishioner status is based on a minimum annual contribution to the parish. St. Mary's Visitation Parish community has a long history of generously supporting our school to offer the best in Catholic education. Financial aid is available to allow our parish families the opportunity to attend our school.
Our teachers are amazing! SMV faculty includes 19 full-time and six part-time teachers. Nine teachers hold master's degrees, and many of our other teachers are in the process of pursuing advanced degrees. SMV is committed to providing its faculty and staff with professional development opportunities. As licensed educators, they are committed to continually update and expand knowledge and skills in their areas of expertise. Three of our teachers were recently selected to participate in a NASA Explorer Schools event in Houston.
And so are our parents! Parent volunteers are a valued resource at SMV! The contributions of our parent volunteer community are essential to providing the best educational and social experience of our students. Parents are encouraged to lend their time and talents in a variety of areas -- in the classroom, on the playground, in the gym and more!

- Home and School relies on volunteer parents to accomplish its mission to provide programs, opportunities and funds to enhance the educational and social experience of our students. Parents are needed to chair or assist with its fundraisers and social events, including the annual Auction for Education and Spooks and Spoofs and to coordinate its multiple programs and events.
- School Committee is an advisory group that relies on parents to assist the principal and pastor in developing a vision to uphold the mission of the school and promote Catholic education. Parents are welcome additions to School Committee and its subcommittees, which are advancement, planning, budget, technology and policy.
- The Athletic Association relies on volunteer parents to coach students and assist in activities to provide a positive athletic experience for our young athletes.
