Stem Shuttle Visits SMV
St. Mary's Visitation hosted the Dream Flight USA STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Shuttle. The STEM Shuttle is a 45-foot, 20-ton tour bus called the "Spirit of Education," and is a hands-on activity center where SMV students spent time on board at different work stations learning to design a space station, work in space, fix the Hubble Telescope, learn about lunar and solar eclipses, and more. Check out the news coverage from local media below:
Principals Cite Importance of Catholic Schools in Evangelization:
St. Mary's Principal, Mary Tretow, discusses the importance of Catholic Schools in evangelization in a recent issue of The Catholic Herald.
Engineering Design on a Dime:
"In a Wisconsin classroom, Kathy Biernat’s fifth graders have a problem. They have to send a potato chip to another classroom, keeping the chip intact. The problem? Her students can’t use any traditional packing materials like bubble wrap or packing peanuts. It’s more than a class project: as students discuss materials and test designs, they’re starting to think like engineers."
7th Graders Create Book About Elm Grove
St. Mary's Visitation's seventh graders created a book to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Elm Grove for their Writing class. As a class, the students brainstormed a list of some of their favorite and some of the most important places in Elm Grove. Each student then picked one of the topics, emailed interview questions to an employee at each place, and wrote a nonfiction piece for their page in the book. Although the book started out as just an assignment for a class, it has grown to symbolize the love and pride that the students and citizens have for the Elm Grove community. The book is available on blurb.com by searching Elm Grove.
