Homework Homework is a necessary part of learning. The purpose of homework is to enrich what is happening at school as well as to reinforce and practice SKILLS that have been taught. It is also intended to develop sound study habits for education. Homework consists of experiences, which will supplement, enhance and broaden concepts studied within the classroom. It is not limited to paper-pencil tasks and will attempt to integrate a number of learning options. Recreational reading, silently or aloud depending upon the age of your child, is encouraged as a vital family practice each evening. Students are expected to read one book at their reading level each week during the summer and write one book report per summer month. Generally, no homework assignments will be given on weekends or holidays; however, long-term projects will involve weekend time. When a child has been absent, he/she is responsible for completing the work missed. Students will be given one day for homework catch up for each day of illness. Work may be picked up by a brother, sister, parent or neighbor at 2:55 each afternoon. Family vacations are discouraged during the school year. On rare occasions, family vacations require students to miss a few days of the school year. Students will be required to request work/assistance after he/she returns. Vacations during the school year should be rare exceptions. Teachers are not required to give homework to students leaving on vacation. Homework will be provided when a student returns. Work missed during vacation absence must be turned in to the teacher within a week of return if credit is to be received. Students in grades 1-3 may be assigned 20-30 minutes of home study; those in grades 4 and 5 may be assigned 45-60 minutes of home study; students in grades 6-8 may be assigned 60 -90 minutes of home study if teachers feel it is necessary. Please note that this is merely a GUIDELINE. Since learning is an individual experience for each student and study skills vary from student to student, the task at hand may require more or less time. Feel free to confer with your child's teacher relative to the homework policy if any questions arise. Kindly note that if your child is spending longer than the recommended time, you may want to set some clear limits and confer with your child's teacher(s) for assistance in study skills and organization for your child. Junior High Homework Policy: Students should be academically responsible and accountable for their homework. Our policy will give the responsibility to the students. Lunch detentions will no longer be served for academic reasons. Students are required to write down all assignments in a school purchased assignment notebook. (If this assignment notebook is lost a new one can be purchased through the school office.) Assignments are generally given at the end of class and a list of assignments is posted in each homeroom. If an assignment is not completed, the teacher who has given the assignment will highlight the missing assignment in the student's assignment notebook. The purpose of this highlight is purely as a communication tool between parent and teacher. The assignment may be turned in at the next class for 80% of the value of the assignment. Once the assignment has been turned in, the teacher will initial the highlighted assignment. This way the parent(s) know the assignment has been completed. Please note : It is the responsibility of the students to turn in missing assignments and have the assignment notebook initialed. If the assignment is not turned in at the next class, a zero will be averaged into the student's grade. Parents are asked to look at their student's assignment notebook every night so they can see any assignments that are missing. Assignment notebooks must be signed by a parent every Friday and brought back to school on Monday. This will aid you in keeping track of how well your child is keeping up with his or her academic responsibilities. Tests and quizzes need to be signed and returned the following school day. When a student plans to be absent from school, whether it is a school-sponsored function or a non-school-sponsored function, assignments will not be given out in advance. Students may retrieve their assignments upon their return to school. In order for credit to be received, the student will be given one day for every day absent, to complete their assignments. Students need to use a black or blue ink pen (not gel-ink) for all assignments, quizzes and tests; pencil for Math class. A red pen is required for correcting any assignments. Homework Tips for Parents The greatest support any parent of children in all grades can provide is to furnish a suitable atmosphere in which a child can study each evening. Parents may want to spend some concentrated time at the start of the school year OBSERVING the strategies each child uses to organize the task at hand, set priorities and approach difficult and challenging material. Since homework serves to give teachers feedback about concepts learned and not clearly understood, parents are invited to assist children in formulating clear questions about concepts or material not understood which can be given to the teacher the next day for clarification.
