Notes From the School Office

St. Mary's Visitation to Add K3 Program

We are pleased to announce that St. Mary's Visitation will introduce a K3 Program for the 2012-2013 school year.  SMV will offer a two-day K3 option on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30-11:30 AM or a three-day option on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30-11:30 AM.  Before school care will also be available.  Students must be three-years-old by September 1, 2012 to attend.  Please spread the word to your family and friends, and encourage them to attend our upcoming Open House on Sunday, January 29th from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Families will be able to tour the school and find out more about what St. Mary's has to offer at all grade levels. Registrations will be accepted beginning in January for existing families. We will accept all other registrations during Open House. Class size will be limited. If you have any questions, please contact the school office at 262-782-7057.

Morning Parking Lot Drop-off Procedures for the East Lot

Please remember that if you need to leave your car for any reason during morning drop-off, you need to park you car in the painted, lined parking area rather than pull to the curb.  Curb drop-off is for parents who want to move quickly.  Moreover, curb drop-off is for students who can get themselves and their belongings out of the vehicle without parental assistance.  Also, all parents and children moving from parked cars to the sidewalk must use the painted crosswalk for everyone's safety and peace of mind.  Everyone's participation with these procedures is expected and appreciated.

Christmas Tree Ornament Donations

Please help us decorate our office Christmas tree.  Send an ornament with your family's name and the year 2011 to the office and we will hang your ornament on our Christmas tree this year and for years to come.  Thank you to those families who have already sent in ornaments.  We appreciate your support and Christmas spirit.

Gift Giving and Tax Time (do they really go together?)

Parents, Grandparents, Alumni, and Friends of St. Mary's Visitation School did you know that you can double your contribution to the school through your employer's gift matching program?  Many area employers offer this very generous gift matching opportunity; it only requires a second of your time to submit the form provided by your employer. What a great way to help St. Mary's Visitation School!  Please contact your employer as to whether or not they have a gift matching program and hurry before December 30, 2011 to claim your tax deduction.  Thank you for your tax deductible investment in our children's education here at St. Mary Visitation School.

Technology at SMV

Nook Simple Touch E-Readers in the SMV Library

One of the goals of our library media program at SMV is to develop lifelong leisure readers. We are well on our way with over 12,000 print materials in our library, but now technology gives us another equally effective method of delivery. The availability of e-readers in a school library provides another means of motivating and encouraging students to read for pleasure.

Through a recently obtained, very generous donation, SMV is acquiring 25 Nook Simple Touch e-readers to lend to our students. These will be loaded with e-books addressing a wide range of interests, age groups and reading levels. There are several reasons why a student might choose to read from an e-reader:

  • Adjusting print size will allow a student to read with ease.
  • A built in dictionary can help a struggling reader feel more secure with the content.
  • Highlighting and bookmarking features can allow a student to refer back in the story, dig deeper, or keep track of ideas.
  • Having multiple titles on one device can make an entire series available, rather than having to wait each time to check out the next book in the series.
  • E-ink is easier on the eyes for long stretches of time, simulating paper rather than the eye strain that may occur with a backlit device.
  • The novelty of reading books on an e-reader is a great motivator for students who may be reluctant to read for recreation.

Any student who wishes to use a Nook from the SMV library must have a permission form on file. Initially, the e-readers will be available to students in 6-7-8 grade. We plan to offer them to lower grades as age appropriate books are added to the e-readers.

Jr. High students who have their own e-readers have inquired about bringing them to school for leisure reading. This is allowed if their device is an e-reader only. They may not bring a device that has other functions such as Internet surfing, games, etc. This would eliminate Nook Color, Nook Tablet, Kindle Fire, iPads, or any other tablet device. Students will not be allowed to download e-books at school. SMV e-books are only available on our own Nook devices. A permission form must be on file in order for a student to bring their own e-reader to school.

Permission forms are available through Miss Benson's library Classpage or linked on the weekly Virtual Backpack.

Christmas Holiday Concert this Thursday

This Thursday, December 15th is the all-school Christmas Concert in the SMV gym at 6:30PM.  All students are required to perform as part of their grade for music class.  We look forward to seeing you there and sharing some great Christmas music!  Students are to dress up nicely (see the dress-up day section of your handbook if you need clarification) and arrive around 6:00-6:10.  They should stop in their homeroom to drop off their coats at their lockers and will be sitting with their homeroom teacher during the concert.  The concert is free and all parents, family, and friends are encouraged to come and watch.  We expect the concert to last a little over one hour.  If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Rodig at krodig@stmaryeg.org by early Thursday morning.  We are also looking for parent volunteers who might be willing to take a few photos at the concert and share them with the school, and a parent volunteer who could record the concert on their videocamera and share that with the school.  Let Mrs. Rodig know if you can help!

It has come to our attention that there are some people who need special seating, so we are offering the night of the Christmas concert Special Reserved Seating for People who are Physically Challenged.

If you or a guest have a physical disability that prevents you from climbing bleachers, please email me at kdries@stmaryeg.org by December 14th, 2011 and we will reserve 1 seat for you and 1 seat for a companion at the program.  Seats will be marked with your name on it and will be held until 5 minutes before the program.

Home and School would like to extend an extra special thank you to the wonderful SMV faculty and staff that contributed their time and efforts at the book fair:  Principal Tretow, Mrs. Guerino, Mrs. Pawlak, Mrs. Smrz, Ms. Beckman, Mrs. Rodig and Mr. Falk.  We also want to extend our gratitude to the wonderful quiz bowl participants, forensic students, and 2nd-4th grade singers who put on a great show.   Last but not least, thanks to all of you who took the time to stop in at the book fair or order books on-line.  The event would not have been a success without your support.
