What a wonderful Open House! All of the hard work and dedication offered by all who were involved to help make this year's event a success was amazing. I would like to take this opportunity to thank:
- the teachers for their preparation and being on hand to meet and greet all the visitors to their classrooms;
- Kris Dries for all her helpful assistance with the registration process;
- the many volunteers (parents and students who: spoke at mass, greeted, toured, displayed extra-curricular activities and offered refreshments to the visitors of our school;
- the maintenance staff for providing and setting up all the needed equipment and furniture, for shoveling, plowing and salting the sidewalks and parking lot;
- to the Boy Scouts who prepared and served a delicious pancake breakfast;
- to Jennifer Svastisalee for the architectural drawing of our new K3 classroom
- a SPECIAL thank you to the Open House Planning Committee (Margaret Thew, Molly Berens, Nora Mihm and Joanna McQuide) for their valuable input and time involved in planning this very special event.

Open House Update
The Open House Committee sends out a thank you to all the SMV families who helped promote Open House and encouraged family, friends and neighbors to come and take a look. Our school will continue to grow and thrive with the help and support of our current families so please promote SMV to your family members, neighbors and friends and let them know what a wonderful school we have. Families may call the school office to arrange a tour or shadow day at any time. You make SMV the school that it is and can continue to be. Thank you.
Thank you to our wonderful faculty and staff for all of their organization and time in setting up their classrooms and participating in the Open House. Thank you to our facilities staff for the set-up and clean-up.

| Elementary Students, It's Forensic Time at SMV!
Elementary Students, the Forensics Meet is Coming Soon! The John Hochhaus In-House Forensic Meet is Friday, March 2, at 6pm for grades 3, 4 and 5. What is forensics? It's the art of public speaking, and SMV is one of the only schools in the area to offer an elementary forensic program. Students are invited to compete in one of several categories, including prose, poetry, demonstration, acting or infomercial. Enter as an individual or with a group! It's great experience and FUN! Trophies and pizza party awarded to the class with the greatest participation. Coaching sessions are available 3-4 pm February 6, 13 and 20. This event is sponsored by SMV Home and School. Elementary Forensics Registration Form
Six Flags Read to Succeed
Children in K5 through gr. 6 are invited to participate in Six Flags Read to Succeed. Any student who completes 6 hours of reading (independently or being read to) will receive a free ticket to Six Flags. Students received their forms this past week. Completed forms must be returned to school by February 24. Happy reading!
St. Mary's Students Earn First Place at State Championships
On Saturday, January 28th, five St. Mary's Junior High students competed in the annual Wisconsin State Spanish Pronunciation Contest Championships at Pius the XI High School.
St. Mary's made a clean sweep of first place presentations in both the prepared poetry and prepared reading competition.
Winning first-place honors in the Memorized Reading section were 8th grader Molly Carrig and 7th grader Elizabeth Janowski.

Congratulations to the students on their fine efforts!

Home and School has many great activities scheduled in the New Year for your family! Please mark your calendar and plan to join us for the following:
February 2 Matt Wilhelm Assembly
As a thank you for participating in Home & School's fall Magazine & Gift drive, Matt Wilhelm from "America's Got Talent" will be performing at an all-school assembly on Thurs., Feb. 2. Those students who met the sales goal of $100 in sales per student/max $300 per family are invited to participate in a Meet & Greet with Matt after the assembly. A small photo of Matt will be provided for autographs, but your child is welcome to bring something different to be signed. VIP passes will be handed out by the teachers.
February 3 Country Springs
Country Springs has just given us word that a limited number of wristbands will be available for purchase at the door for the reduced $12 rate. These will be available on a first come, first served basis. SMV Day is this Friday, Feb. 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. See you there!
February 17 Parent's Night Out - Bowling at AMF Bowlero
Looking for a break from the winter doldrums? Join your fellow SMV parents and get your (bowling) game on at AMF Bowlero Lanes in Tosa on Friday, Feb. 17 from 7-9 p.m. $11 per person gets you unlimited bowling and shoe rental. Our "Island Paradise" Dinner Auction on March 10th, 2012 is approaching quickly!
Again, the auction committee wishes to thank those of you who have made contributions already in the form of donations, sponsorships and/or advertising. We do still need additional merchandise doantions, in-kind gifts or sponsorships to help underwrite some of our packages, so please give consideration to helping in any way possible. We do ask those who are planning on making donations or considering donations to do so by February 17th to help us balance our timeframe and last minute details/deadlines as we get closer to the event. Also, we are offering some special advertising rates for those who offer a discount coupon or percentage off in their ad. Not only will your ad be in our program catalog but it will be circulated throughout the entire parish the weekend following the event! If you own a business, work at or know of somewhere that you think would benefit from advertising in our catalog, see the donation form link or contact Bill Martin.
Also, don't forget about the Wine Pull! Please bring your bottles of wine (please no champagne, sparkling wine or liqueurs) to the school office by February 17th. We are in need of 75 bottles, so don't be shy!

Ash Wednesday Morning of Reflection
Sponsored by St Mary's Visitation Christian Women, all are welcome Wednesday, February 22, 2012 for a morning of Lenten preparation beginning with an All School Mass at 8:00AM.
Msgr. Shecterle will help us prepare our hearts for our Lenten journey during a reflection at 9:30am in the Atrium.
Stations of the Cross "With Mary, the Mother of Jesus" will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the Church.
Coffee/juice, muffins and hot cross buns are available prior to the reflection; light soup/salad lunch to follow. Cost: covered by Speed Pass or $8

Valentine's Date Night Flyer
Junior High Valentines Dance
All 7th/8th grade SMV school or EDGE teens are invited Friday, February 10th from 7:30-9:30PM at St. Dominic Parish. The cost is $6 plus the donation of a new pair of socks. Stop by the parish office to pick up forms or download them off of the parish website or in this newsletter. Please remember that if you have not filled out the junior high policy form to do so as well. Chaperones are needed for this dance. If we do not get a sufficient amount of chaperones, we will have to cancel the event. Registration is due no later than Monday, February 6th! Alive Again: Reawakening Your Catholic Faith
Join us for a 3 day Lenten journey with national recording artist and inspirational speaker, Steve Angrisano. This is an event for all ages, from young children to seniors and everyone in between. You do not want to miss out on this spiritually rewarding week! The dates for "Alive Again" are March 5, 6, and 7 in the St. Mary's Visitation Church Atrium from 6:30-8:00pm. All are welcome and there is no cost to attend! Watch the bulletin for more information in the coming weeks.

Sunset Playhouse's Song and Dance Man
Saturday, February 4

Elm Grove Library, 13600 Juneau Blvd, O'Neill Room
Come and see the play "Song and Dance Man", a sweet story about the importance of family and its rich history, performed by Sunset Playhouse. Two children follow their grandpa into his attic and in the most forgotten section of that dusty room, there is an old trunk. And when the trunk is opened, the past sings and dances to remind the children how much fun it is to live life!
All children must be accompanied by an adult. Admission is free. No reservations required.
The Elm Grove Public Library is Celebrating 50 years.
Please join us in a community celebration of 50 years of the Elm Grove Public Library on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at the Elm Grove Women's Club, 13885 Watertown Plank Road, Elm Grove, WI. The reception and cash bar begins at 6:00 PM with dinner to follow at 7:00PM. The Library Cabaret Show and Candy Decker and Phil Smith begin at 8:00 PM.
