Funerals

The death of a loved one represents a deep loss, and at times, a tragic event. The Church recognizes the need both to remember the soul of the deceased and to assist in healing the human anguish of those who remain behind.

The Church has provided the Order of Christian Funerals to help in the grieving process. There are three specific elements of our Christian funeral rites, each of which is important. The first is the Vigil Service, which allows us to gather, pray, and reflect on the life of the deceased. The second is the Mass of Christian Burial with its focus on hope in the Resurrection and the promise of Eternal Life. The last element is the Rite of Committal which is usually prayed at the cemetery, and which accompanies our final farewell to the departed.

While funeral directors encourage preplanning of the funeral process, the preparation for the funeral services can provide both peace of mind and the comfort of knowing that the wishes of the deceased will be carried out. Too often, particularly in cases where there are few or no surviving Catholic relatives, there is a real concern that the funeral rites will be partially eliminated or otherwise compromised.

We are prepared to assist in preplanning the liturgical portion of any parishioner's funeral services using a simple form and the publication "Through Death to Life", which are available at our Parish Office. You may then attach this form to other important documents where it will be sure to be found when needed, and we'll keep a copy on file here in the parish.

At the time of death, the family, directly or through the funeral director, will contact the parish office to schedule the day and time of the funeral or Memorial Mass. Once the time has been set, the family will meet with the priest at which time they will be given a planner and all the necessary materials to help them plan the funeral liturgy, or a copy of the preplanned form.
